Cleaning Fruits and Vegetables!

Everyone knows buying organic fruits and vegetables is the best for health. In spite of knowing what is good for health it is not often feasible to go 100% organic due to budget constraints and/or availability.

The environmental working group keeps publishing the top dirty dozen one needs to buy organic and also the top dozen clean produce list as well. Here is the link below

To remove the pesticides from produce I came across three ways to wash them and I tried them all. You can try them too and see what works for you.

First one, I used a bowl of water about 3-4 cups water and a teaspoon of baking soda and mixed it well. Then washed and soaked the produce for 5-10 minutes in the bowl and later used them.

Second one, I used a bowl of water same as above and used a teaspoon of white cooking vinegar and baking soda and washing the produce and soaking it in the bowl for 5-10 minutes. Some may not like the smell/taste of vinegar but I did not find much difference in the taste of the produce. If you cannot withstand the vinegar just baking soda should be fine.

Third one which I use more often is a teaspoon of sea salt and a pinch of turmeric mixed in a bowl of 3-4 cups of water and soak my produce for about 5-10 minutes and use them for cooking or making fruit salads.

Hope the above methods of washing removes most of the pesticides and keeps one healthy when 100% organic is not feasible for whatever reasons. Hope one day all the food grown will be 100% organic and affordable for all and non-GMOs will be the norm so taking care of our health and our planet’s health will not become like the most difficult task.
